You don't need to stick to anything solid but try to not have too many different patterns together. Spice things up! Try different fabrics such as silk, velvet, cotton, or brocade. Even pillows with accents such as tassels, fringe, or embellishments can really liven things up.
Once you've picked out the decorative bed pillows you'd like to use, it's time to arrange them. A very basic but effective way to set them out is in a triangle. Starting at the head board, stand up three - five of your biggest pillows. These will be the backbone to your design. In the second row will be the ones that are more mid size. And in the third row, the smallest pillows will take the lead. Remember that the order you put them in isn't set in stone. You can shake things up by rearranging them a bit differently every time you make your bed.
